HTC has had a bumpy ride with its latest flagship, the HTC One, acting as a saviour and giving a much-needed boost to the Taiwanese manufacturer, selling more than five million handsets since its launch.

Following on from this recent success, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive as a rumoured mid-range spin-off of the flagship is said to be on its way to rival the forthcoming release of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.

But how would the device measure up to its Samsung competition and will it make an impact on the budget smartphone market to stand out from the wealth of cheap mobile contracts already on offer?

HTC One Mini

Although nothing as yet has been officially announced, a leaked image of the new model alongside the HTC One, as well as a listing on the firm’s website has stated that the device will be known as the HTC One Mini.

Pegged as a more affordable version of the premium flagship, it is hotly rumoured that the One Mini will house a 4.3-inch 720p display, a 1.4GHz dual-core processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. The device is said to come with Android 4.2.2 OS and have HTC Sense skinned on top.

In terms of camera capabilities, there are whispers of a 4 megapixel UltraPixel camera, which is capable of full HD video recording along with the HTC Zoe editing functions.

These specs may be watered down compared to the flagship handset but the aluminium unibody returns to emulate its high-end counterpart’s sleek design, with the Beats Audio front-facing speakers also included.

With a possible launch coming in August to help the Taiwanese manufacturer capitalise on the lucrative mid-range market, the HTC One Mini will go head-to-head with Samsung’s budget offering.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

Dubbed as a smaller and cheaper version of the Korean company’s flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is a compact handset aimed at giving potential consumers a chance to explore the S4 experience in a more affordable package.

Like the HTC One Mini, the S4 Mini houses a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display but packs an impressive punch with its 1.7GHz dual-core processor. An 8 megapixel camera is supported by a 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera and the device has 8GB internal storage and 2GB RAM.

The handset is also full of features taken from the flagship device, including the S Health fitness suite and the Group Play media sharing service, with Android 4.2.2 on-hand and Samsung’s latest TouchWiz UI on top.

Coming in two versions – a 3G-enabled device with 1GB of RAM and a 4G LTE model, the S4 Mini is rumoured to have a July release date making it hot on the heels of the flagship Galaxy S4.
